Bone by Bone, Hair by Hair is a collaborative production with the Norwegian Ibsen Scope. The work is directed by Katie Yang, choreographed by Henriette Blakstad, and performed by dancers from both Taiwan and Norway.
Inspired by Peer Gynt, the classic play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, the work draws on the story of a man who escapes reality and becomes lost in a world of fantasy and self-delusion, only to be forced to confront his own identity and existence. Rather than retelling Ibsen's original narrative, Bone by Bone, Hair by Hair uses it as a point of departure to investigate how identities are created, negotiated, and transformed in an increasingly digital world.
The 40-minute performance is divided into three acts. Throughout the performance, one dancer wears a motion-capture system that allows their movements to control a virtual puppet in real time, while two additional dancers collaboratively manipulate a life-sized physical puppet. The dancer, the virtual puppet, and the physical puppet form three interconnected entities that continuously influence and constrain one another.
As the performance unfolds, the power relationships among these three entities are repeatedly reversed: from performers controlling puppets, to puppets taking control of their performers, and ultimately to a state in which both become inseparable and continuously reshape one another. The work creates a constantly shifting network of power that challenges conventional understandings of the boundaries between subject and object, controller and controlled.
