The exhibition is the outcome of Chang’s residency at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop as part of 2014 Creative Initiative Award, having been selected by a panel of Scottish visual arts professionals from a huge number of international applicants. The Creative Initiative Award has been created to provide funding and assistance to artists wishing to develop and realise innovative artistic projects.

During the residency, the artist created five mechanical installations by reassembling found objects picked up from the streets. These mechanical works sometimes functioned, but at times they also experienced malfunctions or destruction. The artist cleverly harnessed these unpredictable elements and transformed them into sculptural elements.

As the audience enters the exhibition space, they are transported into a setting reminiscent of a cathedral, where these artworks are displayed like religious statues.

The operation, malfunctions, and destruction of these mechanical installations serve as metaphors for death and rebirth, miracles, and resurrection in religious experiences. Simultaneously, the artist employs non-material elements such as light and smoke to merge with the mechanical devices, transforming the exhibition space into a transcendent existence beyond the material world. This creates a sensory experience for the audience, akin to a religious encounter.
