She, You, and Her is an interactive mobile game that draws inspiration from the once-popular H-Game genre. It takes the form of a visual novel (NVL) constructed with multiple narrative threads, sound, and a large number of images. The story is set in Taipei in the 1990s, and players follow the perspective of a high school student protagonist as they travel through various scenes, from electronic markets to bookstores selling pirated DVDs and erotic magazines.
The game is divided into three weeks, for a total of twenty days of gameplay. It is presented in the form of a serial drama, and players receive a new update each day of gameplay. In the first week, the protagonist meets a girl named Yueai and embarks on a love story. In the second week, the protagonist's feelings for Yueai gradually deepen. However, the game starts to experience various system abnormalities, and at the same time, Yueai's self-awareness grows stronger, causing her to rebel against the decisions made by the player. By the third week, Yueai begins to harass players, sending harassment messages and causing their phone functions to switch on and off uncontrollably. Players start to feel their lives being kidnapped by Yueai.
She, You, and Her attempts to explore the relationship between humans and technology by raising questions: are people playing games, or are games playing with people? Are they using the internet, or is the internet using them?
H-Game
H-Game, which literally translates to "perverted game" in English (Japanese: エッチゲーム or エッチゲー), is also known as an erotic game (Japanese: エロゲ). In 1979, the Japanese company HUDSON released "Yakyuken," which is recognized as the earliest commercial game to depict sexual scenes publicly. With the takeoff of the Japanese economy in the 1980s and the rise of home computers as a necessity in many households, H-Games began to flourish along with the growth of the anime market.
H-Games primarily target male players and use anime-style cute girls as characters for sexual fantasies or virtual girlfriends. Players usually play as male characters and interact with the girls in the game, eventually achieving sexual relationships with them. H-Games have diverse plots and designs, including romantic love, dating simulation, sci-fi fantasy, and school life, among other themes.
The target audience for H-Games is predominantly male players, offering them a means to fulfill their sexual fantasies or virtual romantic desires through the game's depiction of beautiful female characters. Players typically assume the role of a male character and interact with the game's female characters. The relationships and developments between these characters are the core of the game. By making choices and increasing the favorability of their virtual girlfriends, players ultimately aim to achieve sexual encounters with these virtual characters. The popularity of H-Games within the male community has sparked numerous discussions regarding gender politics, particularly due to the often passive portrayal of women awaiting male pursuit, while male characters can strategically navigate multiple female options in pursuit of the ultimate reward: sex.
In the storyline of She, You, and Her, the artist attempts to subvert the gender dynamics commonly found in H-Games. In the first week of gameplay, the virtual girlfriend is portrayed as a passive high school sweetheart. However, in the second week, she starts to break free from the constraints of the game's character design. Ultimately, the virtual girlfriend turns the tables and kidnaps the male player. This narrative approach intends to challenge the established gender roles, sparking reflection and discussion on gender dynamics.
